Tarapoto: options for relaxing at Laguna Azul

Start preparing for your next vacation! The most beautiful lake in the San Martín region now has more places to stay and explore.

Just like home: Maloca Inn

This lovely two-storey house has a country feel, immaculate white walls and wooden finishing. The big attraction of this hotel is its swimming pool, just a few steps from the lake. It has just 12 rooms, giving this refuge an intimate, family atmosphere. It also has a partly open-air restaurant made from natural materials, where traditional local jungle dishes are served. Thanks to the central location of this hotel, you can also choose to enjoy lunch or an evening meal in one of the nearby tourist restaurants. There are no packages on offer, but the staff can put you in touch with guides for local excursions. A double room costs S/180 Peruvian soles, including an American breakfast, king-size bed, en suite bathroom, fan, cable television and Wi-Fi. The two twin rooms each have two double beds and can accommodate up to four guests.

Rustic chic: Sauce Lodge

This lodge has been renovated recently and is under new management. It offers six elegant individual cabins with private terraces and a lake view. You can choose between 35 square-meter double or triple rooms and 70 square-meter duplex family rooms that can accommodate up to five guests. The restaurant also has a view of the lake. All the structures have been built using natural local materials, giving the lodge a rustic and bohemian touch. The big attractions here are the tranquility, incredible views and intense green of the surrounding vegetation. The lodge is set apart, off the road to the town of Dos de Mayo, at a serene and privileged location.

Things to do

You can take a boat trip around the whole of Laguna Azul (S/25.00 soles), kayak around the lake (from S/20 for half an hour), or hire a jet ski (from S/ 75 soles for 15 minutes). Just a short trip from the viewing point, you can visit the Ojos Waterfalls and take a refreshing dip surrounded by forest vegetation for just S/20 soles, including transport and guide.

You can also choose to cover yourself with mud and enjoy the many benefits of the Don Grimaldo thermal baths. This open air “spa” has stone-lined pools and a lake, and the visit costs S/30 soles, including transport, entrance fee and a fruit juice. The big attraction of the La Soñada Eco-Park is the variety of tropical and medicinal plants you’ll find there, as well as the orchid garden and butterfly garden. It also has a play area, workshops and a restaurant. This park is home to 40,000 timber-yielding trees and 15,000 fruit trees, and offers an ideal habitat for birdlife. Transport and entrance fees cost S/60.00 for visits from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and S/ 80 soles until 3:30 p.m., with lunch included.
