Tarapoto: On the shores of Laguna Azul (Blue Lake)

Iquitos: On a cruise of the Amazon River
This is one of those things that everyone should do at least once in their life: journey through the rainforest by sailing slowly along the Amazon River aboard an open cruise boat, from the city of Iquitos to the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. A number of companies offer this service, and most of these are luxurious and expensive. We have found a Peruvian company that is a little more affordable, with charming cruise boats made from a combination of steel and wood. The Arapaima has 14 cabins, all with windows that offer beautiful panoramic views. The newest vessel, the Queen Violeta, has 6 suites and 12 double cabins with private bathroom, hot water, air conditioning and lovely views. It can carry a total of 34 passengers. From the bar located on the upper bridge, guests can observe the vast expanse of the lowland Amazon rainforest: immense trees, palms, macaws and other multicolored birds, dolphins cavorting in the river… Everything onboard is designed to offer comfort! The shortest trip takes passengers to the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. It is also possible to explore the route to the triple frontier shared by Peru, Brazil and Colombia.

In recent years Pucallpa has been transformed into the ideal destination for those seeking to switch off for a few days under the Amazonian sun. It offers a number of business hotels and special weekend offers. We recommend the Ucayali River Hotel, which offers packages for couples, or the recently opened Casa Andina. The Casa Andina chain enjoys a very good reputation throughout Peru. The company has opened a Select Category hotel in Pucallpa, equivalent to a high-end 3-star hotel. The rooms are spacious, with LCD television, mini-bar, air conditioning and ceiling fan, Wi-Fi and iPod speakers for your Smartphone. The hotel also offers guests a swimming pool, gym, massage and hairdressing service, coffee shop open all hours and a restaurant serving a combination of Peruvian food with a Tex-Mex touch.
